    Journal Writing Prompt: Peace

    October 31st, 2006

“There is no need to go to India or anywhere else to find peace. You will find that deep place of silence right in your room, your garden or even your bathtub.”

    ~Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

In your journal, write about today’s quote.  Do you have a place of peace where you are?  If so, describe it and write about how it came to be.  If not, consider why you don’t have one, what your place of peace may look like, and commit yourself to creating one soon.

Journal writing prompt bonus:  What do you think Elisabeth may have meant when she said

“You will find that deep place of silence right in your room, your garden or even your bathtub.”

Do you think she means that you carry it with you all the time?  Do you agree?  Do you think she meant an actual physical place?  What does that “deep place of silence” mean to you?  What does it imply?

    Journal Writing Prompt: Habits

    October 30th, 2006

“We are what we repeatedly do; Excellence, then, is not an act, but, a habit.”

    ~Aristotle

In your journal, consider today’s quote. Look at each piece of the quote.

“We are what we repeatedly do” - do you agree or disagree with that statement? Why?

“Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” - Is excellence an act? Is it a habit? What are your views on excellence?

Journal writing prompt bonus: (Introspection Alert!) Examine your own life - not just today, but, look back over the past few years. What habits do you have? How did they develop? Is excellence a habit you have or an act you perform? What’s the difference? Compare and contrast your habits with “excellence”. What are the similarities? Differences?

    Journal Writing Prompt: Trees

    October 26th, 2006

“The trees that are slow to grow bear the best fruit.”

    ~Moliere

Bamboo TreeI bought a tree this past spring. It sits by my bedside, and reminds me of this very quote. You might be wondering how I could have bought a tree that sits by my bedside (no, I don’t have vaulted ceilings!). I’ll tell you the secret - it’s a bamboo tree. It’s a whopping 9″ tall, and has probably only grown 1 or 2 inches since I bought it more than 6 months ago (and survived a thorough mauling by an irritated border collie).

This tree reminds me, every day that sometimes it takes a long time to bear the best fruit. This tree has an incredible root system already, but, I’ve occassionally looked at it and wondered if it’s actually growing because it’s growing at such a slow rate!
In your journal, think about today’s quote….do you agree? Do you think this is something that you should keep in mind as you go through your day? Or, do you think it’s utter nonsense and of no consequence? Why or why not?

Daily Journal writing prompt bonus: Do you see your life as a tree that is quick to bear fruit or slow to grow and bear fruit? Why or why not? How? - give an example from your life to illustrate your answer.

    Journal Writing Prompt: Persistence

    October 23rd, 2006

“We are made to persist. That’s how we find out who we are.”

    ~ Tobias Wolff

In your journal, consider today’s quote.  Do you agree that we are made to persist?  Do you think that persistence helps you find out  who you are?  Wgy or why not?
Journal writing prompt bonus:  Think back to a time when you persisted despite “everyone” telling you that it was useless and you should give up.  Write about this time, and consider this - did that instance of persistence tell you something about who you are?  What did it tell you?  How has that knowledge of yourself helped you since that time?

If you have had a time in your life when you didn’t persist (and possibly wish you would have), what did that tell you about yourself?  How did that knowledge change your actions now?

    Journal Writing Prompt: Independence

    October 20th, 2006

“We allow our ignorance to prevail upon us and make us think we can survive alone, alone in patches, alone in groups, alone in races, even alone in genders.”

    ~Maya Angelou

In your journal, write about today’s quote. Do you agree or disagree? Why? Also, consider this, if you agree, is it truly ignorance that separates us and makes us believe that we must be “independent” from everyone else? Or is it something deeper? Is it (possibly) a cultural lie that we buy into? Is that the same as ignorance? Different?

Daily journal writing prompt bonus: Do you find your life fuller and richer when you are a part of a group - leaning on another (and allowing others to lean on you), helping others (and, of course, allowing them to help you)? Or, are you determined to be “independent”? Explain.

    Happy Journaling!

(Are you wondering why journaling is important? Wondering why most of our prompts are “deep”? Pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee (organic, of course) or tea and check out my new piece on the art of journaling)

    Journal Writing Prompt: Courage

    October 17th, 2006

“You have to accept whatever comes, and the only important thing is that you meet it with courage and with the best that you have to give.”

    ~Eleanor Roosevelt

In your journal, write a response to today’s quote. Is meeting whatever comes with courage and your very best the only important thing? If so, expand on that thought. If not, what other things do you think are important when meeting whatever may come your way.

Daily Journal Writing Prompt Bonus: How do you define “courage”? Do you see yourself as courageous? Why or why not? If you could leave a definition of courage for future generations, what would it be? Who has it? Who could have it? Why?

Journal Writing Prompt: Sickness & Health

    October 16th, 2006

“It’s no longer a question of staying healthy. It’s a question of finding a sickness you like.”

    ~Jackie Mason

At first glance, this quote is somewhat funny, however, once it settles in, the “funny” quickly wears off, and the truth of the  statement may overwhelm you.  In today’s world, there  is an awful lot of sickness - it seems, many days, there is more sickness (in various forms - mentally, physically, and spiritually) than there is health.  Where health used to be the norm, it seems the pendulum has swung the complete opposite direction to health being the “exception to the rule”.

In your journal, consider what Jackie Mason said.   Do you  believe this is just  a comic comment or do you think there  is a greater truth underneath?  Explain & explore your answer in your journal.

Journal writing prompt bonus:  Take a look at your own health - mentally, spiritually, and physically.  Do you see more sickness in you than health?  In your journal, consider this, and if your health is not where it could be, consider what you could do  to move  it in the right  direction.

    Happy Journaling!
