Journal Writing Prompt: Naked or Nice?

    March 20th, 2007

“To say something nice about yourself, this is the hardest thing in the world for people to do. They’d rather take their clothes off.”

    ~Nancy Friday

I’ve got spring fever, and today’s journal writing prompt gives you the chance to giggle and feel a little giddy…after all, what more could you want in life other than peace, joy, and a little bit of giddiness?

In your journal, ponder today’s quote. Which would you rather do - say something nice about yourself or take off all your clothes? Or, to look at it easier - if someone were holding you at gunpoint and you had a choice - which would you choose? What about accepting a compliment from someone else - does it embarrass you? Would you rather strip naked and run around the block? Write about this in your journal. Why do you suppose you feel the way you do?

Daily journal writing prompt bonus: Now, this may be the toughest part of the prompt today. Take a few moments and write 10 nice things about yourself. But, wait, there are a few rules in today’s bonus writings….

First, you may not write or think a “but” or put any caveats on the nice things. For example, stay away from things like “I’m beautiful, but, need to lose a few pounds.” Or “I look nice in my outfit, as long as I don’t look below my waist.”

Second, you may not write about how others see or perceive you - that’s not saying something nice about yourself, that is writing what someone else has said about you. (Trust me, there is a reason for both of these rules!). For example, you shouldn’t write “My husband thinks I have nice legs” or “My boss thinks I am very organized.”

Sounds simple enough? Well, maybe not! Try it - you may really enjoy the feeling of finding what is wonderful about you - particularly if you don’t ever give it much thought and are like *most* people who are way, way too hard on themselves (me included!)

Oh, and by the way, there isn’t an option to take off all your clothes as an alternative to today’s journal writing prompt bonus. So, get our your pen and your journal…..and compile your list of what is wonderful about you!

    Happy Journaling!
