Journal Writing Prompt: Suffering

By Dee · Friday, September 9th, 2005

“Suffering becomes beautiful when anyone bears great calamities with cheerfulness, not through insensibility, but, through greatness of mind.”

~Aristotle

Suffering? Beautiful? No, I’m really not kidding! In your journal, take a few moments to consider what Aristotle is saying. We’ve all seen “ugly” suffering - particularly when it’s something that is just too much to bear. But, have you witnesses “beautiful suffering”? If so, write about it in your journal. As usual, consider what the situation was, how it was handled, and how it moved you. Be as specific as possible in your journal entry.

Journal Writing Prompt Bonus: How can cheerfulness (with a presence of mind - not out of naivety) in the face of calamity be beautiful? How does it speak to you? What can you learn from it?

Happy Journalling!
