Journal Writing Prompt: Truth
October 10th, 2005“The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is.”
~ Winston Churchill
There are two emerging sides to the truth, it seems. One side says that truth is absolute - no matter what, it is always the same - this appears to be the side of the argument that Winston Churchill falls on.
The other side says truth is fluid - depending on the situation, the truth changes. The truth for this side of the argument, therefore, depends solely on the situation, and the situation alone - with no absolute truth being possible.
In your journal, consider the two sides of the “truth debate” - which side are you on? Is the truth always the truth? Or, does it depend on the situation? In your journal, write as if you were providing advice for future generations on your view of the truth. Why do you feel the way you feel?
Journal writing prompt bonus: Have you had a time in your life when the truth was laid out - and it was just there, hanging, waiting for some response? Describe that situation. Was that truth, as Winston Churchill says, incontrovertible? Were you the truth giver or truth receiver? Was it attacked as an untruth?
Happy Journaling!

I think the truth can be either, depending upon the specific truth. A truth of fact - the color of our cloudless sky, for example - I would call absolute. My perception of something - whether guests had a “good” time at an event, for example - is more fluid (each time I consider the answer, the “truth” may change, depending on my emotions, which specific guest or conversation I may recall at each point in time, etc.)
