Journal Writing Prompt: Walk your mind

By Dee · Saturday, August 4th, 2007

“Walking is also an ambulation of mind.”

~Gretel Ehrlich

In your journal, think about the times when you are walking - whether it’s to and from a specific destination, for physical fitness, or to nowhere-in-particular.  Because our mind is always on, walking (no matter what the purpose) seems to bring on a state which  allows the mind to “walk” as well.  Pick a particular/specific instance of a recent walk you took - what was your mind doing?  Where was *it* walking?  Was it “walking” the same direction as you (thinking about your destination) or was it walking somewhere completely different?  Write about it in your journal.

Daily journal writing prompt bonus:  Many years ago, I was introduced to the concept of moving meditation (versus still meditation).  Both have their own unique, yet important, place in my life to this day.  While we all know about the physical benefits of walking, the mental (and spiritual) benefits are rarely discussed.  In your journal, in light of today’s quote, write about the benefits you personally experience from walking that are above and beyond the physical benefits.  Does walking help you sort your thoughts?  De-stress?  What does it do for you spiritually?  Do you notice the mental and spiritual benefits immediately?  What does the ambulation of your mind while walking do for you?

Happy Journaling!
